The business case for legacy modernization is changing as AI reduces the time and effort required for key engineering work across discovery, documentation, development, testing and maintenance. McKinsey reports that generative AI can accelerate modernization timelines by 40 to 50 percent and reduce costs associated with technical debt by about 40 percent. At the same time, delaying modernization can carry a deferral premium through maintenance burden, technical debt, operational and security risk, and lost business capacity. A strong modernization business case should evaluate financial value, business value and risk—not simply the age of the technology.
