A research agent might reason, “I need to know the current market size,” act by searching industry reports, observe the result, reason, “The data is from 2023, I need more recent information,” and act by searching for recent earnings calls.

The enterprise limit: ReAct provides flexibility and transparency. It also raises questions about predictability, explainability, and control. When an agent’s reasoning leads it down unexpected paths, how do you ensure it stays within acceptable boundaries? How do you debug when things go wrong?

  • Planning Pattern

What it does: Emphasizes upfront decomposition of a goal into smaller tasks, identifying dependencies and sequencing execution.

This approach works well for projects with clear stages, constraints, or coordination requirements. It mirrors how human teams plan complex work. An agent coordinating a product launch might plan: gather requirements, validate technical feasibility, create a timeline, assign resources, track milestones, and report status—all of which are structured upfront.

The enterprise limit: In highly dynamic environments, rigid plans can become brittle. Enterprise systems often need adaptive planning that can evolve during execution. Pure planning works when conditions are stable and requirements are clear. Real-world complexity often demands hybrid approaches.

  • Multi-Agent Pattern

What it does: Divides work among specialized agents that collaborate to achieve a goal.

This pattern defines how agents:

  • Maintain a short-term working context during task execution.
  • Access long-term organizational knowledge across workflows.

Enterprise agents must remember prior interactions with customers, track project status over weeks, and access institutional knowledge while respecting security boundaries.

The human-in-the-loop pattern establishes:

  • Review gates for high-impact decisions.
  • Escalation thresholds based on confidence or risk.

  • Exception handling paths when agents encounter edge cases.
